October 15, 2026
Most of the change in Mustang this fall sits on SH-152 or within sight of it. One empty restaurant building is being split into three businesses. A new coffee-and-donut stop is finished on Mustang Road. The city has a grant to replace the equipment at every traffic signal along the highway, and that work is expected to start later this fall. All of this is listed in City Manager Timothy D. Rooney's October 2, 2026 report to the council.
So the corridor is getting more places to pull in just as the city works on how traffic flows past them. If you drive SH-152 for a commute, a school run or a Saturday errand, these changes land on the same few miles of road.
Applebee's sat next to IHOP and Zaxby's off State Highway 152 for about twelve years. It opened in Mustang in 2013 and closed as of April 28, 2025. When the Mustang Times reported the closure, no business license had been filed for a new restaurant, and the building was expected to sit empty for a while.
Seventeen months later, it is being finished out as three businesses. According to the October report, the city has issued tenant finish-out permits to:
None of the three has announced an opening date. 7 Brew is the furthest along, and it is the one built around a drive-thru lane. That matters on a stretch of SH-152 that already has IHOP and Zaxby's on either side.
Dunkin' has finished its new store at 331 N. Mustang Rd., and its store locator lists the cross streets as Mustang Road and Highway 152. That puts it right at the main intersection. The city report gave an expected grand opening of October 3, 2026, and the address now appears on Dunkin's store locator with daily hours and online ordering.
On the same stretch, H2 Physical Therapy has finished remodeling its space at 321 N. Mustang Rd. Together, the two projects add activity to the stretch of Mustang Road just north of the highway.
The east end of the corridor is also getting new tenants. Here is where the newer projects stand, according to the October 2 report:
| Business | Location | Status as of Oct. 2, 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Reign Athletics | 600 E. SH 152, behind Chicken Express and Freddy's | Final occupancy issued for its cheer and gymnastics building |
| Jets Plus | 1700 E. SH 152 | Escrow office open |
| Champion Pest Control | 324 S. Symes Ln. | Open |
| Broncho Towing | 508 S. Symes Ln. | Construction finished |
| Smitty's Garage | 501 S. Symes Ln. | 6,000-square-foot shop permitted, slab poured |
| Ashton Gray retail center | 215 N. Sara Road | 8,023-square-foot building, interior and sewer line still pending |
A cheer and gymnastics gym brings regular pickup and drop-off traffic. Reign Athletics' building sits just off the highway behind two existing fast-food stops.
This is the city's response to the extra traffic. Mustang won a grant through ACOG's 2026 Air Quality Grant Program. It provides $560,000, which covers 80 percent of the project cost, so the full job comes to roughly $700,000. The money will replace the controllers, conflict monitoring equipment and vehicle detection equipment at all of the intersections along State Highway 152.
The goal is coordination. The city says the new system will let signals along the corridor communicate with each other. Once the work is done, the city expects congestion delays on SH-152 in Mustang to drop by 20 to 30 percent. That number is a projection, not a measured result. As of the October report, city staff were still choosing the new signal system, and equipment replacement was expected to begin later this fall.
Work underground is already done. Contractors have finished a 16-inch waterline along SH-152 from just west of Mustang Road to Clear Springs. It was funded partly with American Rescue Plan Act money and Community Project Funding requested through Congressman Frank Lucas' office.
The resurfacing of Clear Springs Road between Southwest 89th Street and SH-152 was postponed earlier because crews and equipment weren't available. It is now set for fall break, starting October 14, 2026. The city chose that window to limit the effect on school traffic.
Clear Springs runs north and south between SW 89th and the highway, so it is one of the roads that carries traffic up to SH-152. Mid-October is when that route will feel different.
Neighborhood streets are being looked at too. The Traffic Commission is meeting today, October 7, to discuss removing the southbound stop sign at S. Highland Dr. and W. Ava Dr. It will also consider adding two stop signs at S. Silver Dr. and W. Ava Dr., which would make that intersection a four-way stop.
Mustang's fall events are at Wild Horse Park and Town Center, at 1201 N. Mustang Rd. Both are a short drive from the highway, so the new signals and the new businesses sit on the way to most of what's on the calendar. The full October and early November lineup:
The fall curbside clean-up falls on three of these Saturdays. Pickup is October 10 for Thursday trash routes, October 17 for Friday routes and October 24 for Monday routes. Items need to be at the curb by 7 a.m.
If you'd rather raise traffic or a new storefront with City Hall directly, Coffee with Mayor Michael Ray runs from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at City Hall on the first Monday of each month, except holidays.
The next round of projects links the highway to the places on this calendar. The Mustang Trails Project will build a walking trail from SH-152, on the west side of Fire Station #1, to the existing trails in the southwest corner of Wild Horse Park. ODOT awarded the contract to Redlands Contracting, and construction is expected to begin in early 2027.
Redlands also won Phase 1 of the Mustang Multimodal Project, which is set to start in early 2027. It adds protected sidewalks between Mustang Public Schools facilities inside city limits and Town Center.
On the south side of town, design is finished for widening Southwest 89th Street between Mustang Road and State Highway 4. Utility relocation is being coordinated now. Construction on the SW 89th and Mustang Road intersection, plus Mustang Road north to the railroad tracks, is expected to begin in summer 2027. That project was part of the sales tax extension voters approved on August 23, 2016.
